Laparoscopy is done to help your doctor determine what is wrong. Sometimes problems occur with a woman's reproductive organs that cannot be detected by a physical exam, x-rays or ultrasound. In these cases a diagnostic surgery called laparoscopy may be performed. This surgery is done with a slender telescope-like instrument called a laparoscope that is inserted through a small cut just below the navel. Anesthesia is required and the procedure involves some discomfort afterwards. Laparoscopy is performed in a day surgery environment and has a relatively short recovery period.

Uterine fibroids are growth that develop from the cells that make up the muscle of the uterus. Thay are also called leiomyomas or myomas. Uterine fibroids are common, benign growths that occur quite often in women. About one in every four or five women has them. Fibroids are most common in women aged 30 - 40, but can occur at any age. Many women who have fibroids are not aware of them because the growth can remain small and not cause a problem. Some symptoms that may occur include bleeding, irregular periods, menstrual pain, abdominal pain, painful intercourse, constipation, miscarriage and infertility. If you have uterine fibroids or symptoms your doctor should check you on a regular basis.

ART means Assisted Reproductive Technology formerly referred to as IVF. In Vitro means "in glass" and refers to the fact that fertilization takes place outside of the woman's body. IVF was originally developed for women who have severe tubal damage. It also can be helpful for couples with infertility caused by pelvic adhesions and low sperm counts. Preparation for an IVF procedure involves stimulation of the ovaries to produce multiple eggs that are capable of fertilization. Fertility hormones are administered at the beginning of a menstrual cycle for this purpose. Ultrasound examinations and blood hormone measurements carefully monitor development of the stimulation process. Dr. Youngkin is one of the founding physicians of the St. David's IVF / ART program and works closely with patients to establish a protocol that best fits their individual situation. GIFT (Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer), ZIFT (Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer), and ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) are all ART procedures performed by Dr. Youngkin. Please call our office for a consultation.

IUI or intra uterine insemination is an in-office procedure that is used to treat a variety of fertility conditions that may include cervical mucus problems, diminished sperm motility and ovulation dysfunction. The procedure involves ovulation monitoring either by ultrasound examination or ovulation predictor kits, sperm washing and insemination. Sperm washing is done by using protein enhanced mediums and centrifuging (device that spins test tubes at high speeds forcing heavy particles in the liquid to settle to the bottom of the tubes and lighter liquid to go to the top) procedures to obtain the best possible specimen. The specimen is then placed in the uterine cavity for fertilization to occur. Please call our office for an appointment to determine if IUI is a possible treatment option for you.
